Who is Michael Tilson Thomas?

In 1969, Thomas made his conducting debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and quickly gained recognition for his musical talent. He went on to serve as the principal conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 1995, he was appointed as the music director of the San Francisco Symphony, a position he held for 25 years until his retirement in 2020.

Thomas is also the Artistic Director Laureate of the New World Symphony, an American orchestral academy in Miami Beach, Florida. He is known for his innovative programming and his commitment to showcasing new and diverse voices in classical music.

In addition to his successful career as a conductor, Thomas is also a prolific composer. He has written numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. A four-disc deluxe box-set, titled “Essential MTT,” was released in 2020 and features 18 of his compositions spanning over five decades.

In 2021, Thomas announced that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Despite this, he remains determined to continue his musical career and has not let his diagnosis slow him down.
