Who is Kathy Hochul?
Kathy Hochul is the 57th and current Governor of New York State. She was born on August 27, 1958, in Buffalo, New York. Hochul is a Democrat and the first female governor of New York.
Hochul attended Syracuse University and earned a degree in political science. She then went on to earn a law degree from Catholic University. After law school, she worked as a legislative aide in Washington D.C. for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.
In 1994, Hochul was elected as the Erie County Clerk, a position she held for 14 years. In 2011, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New York’s 26th congressional district. During her time in Congress, Hochul focused on issues such as job creation, healthcare, and women’s rights.
On August 24, 2021, Hochul became the first female governor of New York after former Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned amid multiple sexual harassment allegations. As governor, Hochul has promised to prioritize issues such as COVID-19 recovery, economic growth, and addressing climate change.
Hochul is married to William J. Hochul Jr., a former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York. They have two children together.
In her first few months as governor, Hochul has made significant changes, including appointing a diverse and all-female senior staff and announcing plans to increase COVID-19 testing and vaccine mandates. She has also focused on rebuilding trust in state government and addressing issues of corruption and ethics.
