Who is Danton Remoto?
Danton Remoto is an acclaimed writer, educator, and media personality from the Philippines. He was born on March 25, 1963, in Basa Air Base, Pampanga, to a military family. He spent his childhood in various cities and provinces, including Zambales, Quezon City, and Cebu. Remoto’s early education was influenced by his parents, who were both teachers. His father, a military officer, taught him the importance of discipline and hard work, while his mother, a teacher, instilled in him a love for literature and the arts.
Remoto’s passion for writing and storytelling was evident at a young age. He would often write short stories and poems, which he would share with his classmates and teachers. His talent for writing was recognized by his English teacher, who encouraged him to join writing competitions. In high school, he won several awards for his literary works, including the prestigious Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.
After graduating from high school, Remoto received a scholarship to study at the Ateneo de Manila University. He pursued a degree in English and graduated with honors. He then went on to earn his Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of the Philippines.
Remoto’s teaching career began in 1985 when he joined the faculty of the Ateneo de Manila University. He taught English and Journalism for over 30 years, mentoring and inspiring countless students. He also taught at universities in the United States and Malaysia, further expanding his knowledge and experience in the field of education.
Aside from teaching, Remoto is also a prolific writer. He has published numerous books, including novels, short story collections, and essays. His works often tackle social and political issues, as well as themes of love, identity, and sexuality. He is also a regular contributor to various publications, both in the Philippines and abroad.
In 1994, Remoto made history by founding Ladlad, the first LGBTQ political party in the Philippines. Through this party, he advocated for the rights and representation of the LGBTQ community in the country’s political landscape. His efforts helped pave the way for the passing of the Anti-Discrimination Bill, which aims to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community.
Remoto’s contributions to literature and LGBTQ rights have earned him numerous awards and recognitions. He is a recipient of the 2011 The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Award for Literature, the highest civilian award in the Philippines. He is also a MacDowell Fellow in Literature and a member of the International PEN.
Today, Remoto continues to write and teach, using his voice and platform to promote equality, diversity, and inclusivity. He is a prominent figure in the LGBTQ community in the Philippines, and his work has inspired and empowered many.
